Launched in 2023, Verve Records\u2019 Great Women of Song<\/em> is a series of CD, vinyl and digital releases highlighting beloved and influential singers who recorded for Verve Records and other labels that now fall under the Universal Music Group umbrella. Peggy Lee\u2019s entry in the series, which draws entirely from her five-year affiliation with Decca Records (1952-56), joins other volumes for Blossom Dearie, Ella Fitzgerald, Astrud Gilberto, Billie Holiday, Shirley Horn, Carmen McRae, Helen Merrill, Nina Simone, Sarah Vaughan and Dinah Washington. Great Women of Song: Peggy Lee<\/em> contains 16 tracks and is available as a CD, a digital download, a standard black LP, and a limited edition \u201copaque custard\u201d color LP. All four formats can be ordered here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n

Six of the collection\u2019s tracks are taken from Lee\u2019s essential album Black Coffee<\/em>. There are two tracks each from her albums Dream Street <\/em>and Miss Wonderful<\/em>, and additional tracks from Decca singles, including Lee\u2019s major chart hit \u201cLover.\u201d Also featured are commercial versions of songs from Lee\u2019s Warner Bros. films The Jazz Singer<\/em> and Pete Kelly\u2019s Blues<\/em>, and another song from the Paramount film White Christmas<\/em>, with Lee replacing the contractually unavailable Rosemary Clooney on the Decca album Selections from Irving Berlin\u2019s White Christmas<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Great Women of Song: Peggy Lee<\/em> features songs by major contributors to the American songbook: Cole Porter (\u201cIt\u2019s All Right with Me,\u201d \u201cMy Heart Belongs to Daddy\u201d), Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart (\u201cI Didn\u2019t Know What Time It Was,\u201d \u201cLover\u201d), and George and Ira Gershwin (\u201cThey Can\u2019t Take That Away from Me\u201d). Lee\u2019s own songwriting is represented on four tracks, including two collaborations with husband Dave Barbour (\u201cI Don\u2019t Know Enough About You,\u201d \u201cTake a Little Time to Smile\u201d), one with Victor Young (\u201cJohnny Guitar\u201d), and a Jazz Singer<\/em> song with words and music by Lee (\u201cThis Is a Very Special Day\u201d).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
