Thirteen tracks make digital debut in third volume from new series<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

LOS ANGELES, CA \u2013 September 13, 2024<\/strong> \u2013 Capitol Records and Universal Music Enterprises (UMe), in conjunction with Peggy Lee Associates, today release Peggy Lee: From the Vaults (Vol. 3)<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, the third installment in the new digital series that features rare tracks currently unavailable on streaming platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recorded for Capitol between 1951 and 1972, the 13 selections on From the Vaults (Vol. 3)<\/em><\/strong> include songs from emerging songwriting giants Burt Bacharach and Jimmy Webb, a popular song by television pioneer Steve Allen, one co-written by Peggy Lee herself, Tin Pan Alley and jazz standards, alternate versions of four songs, and another three songs that remained unreleased in Lee\u2019s lifetime (1920-2002). <\/p>\n\n\n

\u201cStop Living in the Past\u201d<\/strong> is the title of one song included on From the Vaults (Vol. 3)<\/em><\/strong>, and as a recording artist, Lee was as forward-looking as she was nostalgic. Mentored by the great lyricist and composer Johnny Mercer when she began songwriting in the 1940s, Lee paid it forward by recording songs by young, emerging talents throughout her career. In 1957, Lee introduced \u201cUninvited Dream\u201d<\/strong> by Burt Bacharach, then in his late 20s and soon to enjoy his first chart successes with \u201cThe Story of My Life\u201d and \u201cMagic Moments.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jimmy Webb also enjoyed major success as a songwriter in his 20s, and Lee was one of many artists to record his song \u201cDidn\u2019t We.\u201d<\/strong><\/a> She recorded it during a 1969 session for her album Is That All There Is?<\/em> but the song was not included. Television audiences saw her sing it that same year on her documentary special The World of Peggy Lee<\/em>, which chronicled her rehearsal and performance process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of Lee\u2019s recording Jimmy Webb offers: \u201cThe Peggy Lee cover of my song \u2018Didn\u2019t We\u2019 is an exquisite reading and a typically well-crafted vocal performance that Ms. Lee was known for. Each word is given special significance, which is a vocal skill rarely heard today. To hear her voice on this lost recording of one of my songs is a warmly welcomed surprise.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From Lee\u2019s songwriting catalog comes \u201cI Love You but I Don\u2019t Like You,\u201d<\/strong> co-written with Heinie Beau, saxophonist, clarinetist, arranger, and conductor, who regularly worked in the 1940s with Lee and her first husband, guitarist and hit songwriting partner Dave Barbour (\u201cIt\u2019s a Good Day,\u201d \u201cMa\u00f1ana\u201d). \u201cI Love You but I Don\u2019t Like You\u201d<\/strong> was recorded in 1951, when Lee and Barbour divorced. Later that decade, Lee would partner with several musical greats on successful songs, including Victor Young (\u201cWhere Can I Go Without You\u201d), Duke Ellington (\u201cI\u2019m Gonna Go Fishin\u2019\u201d), and Sonny Burke (the songs from Walt Disney\u2019s Lady and the Tramp<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n

Four songs featured in From the Vaults (Vol. 3)<\/em><\/strong> are alternate takes with notable differences from their released versions: \u201cUninvited Dream,\u201d<\/strong> significantly rearranged for release on a 1957 single; \u201cA Taste of Honey\u201d<\/strong> from Lee\u2019s Grammy-nominated 1963 album I\u2019m a Woman<\/em>; \u201cMe and My Shadow,\u201d<\/strong><\/a> the B-side of Lee\u2019s Grammy-winning 1969 single \u201cIs That All There Is?\u201d and also included on the album of the same name; and \u201cI\u2019ll Be Seeing You,\u201d <\/strong>the final track on Lee\u2019s final album for Capitol, 1972\u2019s Norma Deloris Egstrom from Jamestown, North Dakota<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other songs included in From the Vaults (Vol. 3)<\/em><\/strong> are \u201cNo More,\u201d<\/strong> a jazz standard by Toots Camarata and Bob Russell that was introduced by Billie Holiday, and \u201cThis Could Be the Start of Something Big,\u201d<\/strong> the most successful song penned by television pioneer Steve Allen, on whose shows Lee guested numerous times. Both songs were unreleased in Lee\u2019s lifetime, along with the aforementioned \u201cDidn\u2019t We.\u201d<\/strong> The collection is rounded out by the non-album singles \u201cEv\u2019rytime,\u201d \u201cMaybe This Summer,\u201d \u201cStop Living in the Past,\u201d<\/strong> \u201cTonight You Belong to Me,\u201d <\/strong>and \u201cWould You Dance with a Stranger.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the release of the four-volume From the Vaults<\/em><\/strong> digital series, Lee\u2019s entire catalog of issued master recordings from the Universal family of labels \u2014 Capitol, Decca, A&M, and Polydor \u2014 will be accessible via digital streaming. The fourth volume will compile duets and other musical collaborations recorded between 1947 and 1972, Lee\u2019s last year under contract with Capitol Records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
